The beginning of the end
Following the motto “more is better,” Brabus became famous for enlarging Mercedes-Benz engines in the pursuit of more performance. An impressive example of this approach is the 600 SEC 6.9, which was only the starting point. After thoroughly enjoying one of these 1990s tuning royalties, Motorcar Journal visited the Brabus headquarters in Bottrop to talk with retired Chief Technical Officer Ulrich Gauffrés, the powertrain mastermind since the early days of the company.
In these times of eco-influencing and climate advocacy it is anything but acceptable to blast through traffic in a hulking big Benz powered by a gas-guzzling V12, avoiding commuting EV disciples while flooring the throttle at any given opportunity, just to revel in the phenomenal sound and the sensation of 705 Nm (520 lb-ft) of torque.
