Over seventy years ago Mercedes-Benz surprised the world with a hitherto unknown blend of innovation, performance, quality, and comfort. Since then, the 300 SL has grown into an icon that transcends generational divides and cultural barriers. Motorcar Journal traveled to Stuttgart in the modern-day equivalent for a historic encounter.
While rebuilding the factories and restarting production after the Second World War, Daimler-Benz toyed with the idea to resume racing activities. Besides the ambition to continue the success of the prewar period, the effort was also intended to boost the brand image and increase sales, particularly in lucrative markets such as the United States.
